On November
30th 1786 the Duke of Florence, Pietro Leopoldo di Lorena, issued a
very important law. He abolished the death penalty in the territory he
ruled. Pietro Leopoldo, a significant and tolerant ruler, represented the most
modern and advanced state of the time. He initiated the construction of the
Florence-Livorno railway and reclaimed the southwest portion of Tuscany (the Maremma and the Chiana Valley)
and many other benefits for his territory.
The city of
Florence is
very proud to be connected to the first leader who protected human rights. It
has proclaimed November 30 an official Holiday in Tuscany (schools are open though). This day
will be an opportunity to reflect and discuss timeless themes such as peace and
justice. Events, conference and concerts (of music during Pietro Leopoldo's
time) will be held throughout the Region.
